Google Cloud lost one London zone. HSBC users reported problems.
A power event knocked out part of Google Cloud's London region, The Register reported.
The affected part was europe-west2-b, one of the region's three zones. Downtime began at 06:08 UTC on Tuesday. At 14:03 UTC, seven hours and 55 minutes later, Google said the issue was mitigated for most customers.
Google's status page said: "A power event caused an outage within europe-west2-b zone. The power event is mitigated." Google told The Register the status page was its only information.
Downdetector, a site that collects user problem reports, showed problems at Lloyds Bank, HSBC, Royal Mail and Revolut, according to The Register. Neither The Register nor Google says which of these firms run on Google Cloud. Revolut said "all our customers' money and data are safe."
Keele University lecturer Dr Amro Al-Said Ahmad estimated that 38 services were down. That is his count, not Google's.
The Register notes that the three London zones are there to protect against hardware failures. Google's suggested workaround was to shift affected workloads "to another available location" if feasible.
Google says it will publish an analysis once its internal investigation is complete.
