How a story is made

A named source published it
Every story starts from a named outlet, a regulator or the company's own statement, published in the last 72 hours. The source is linked on the story.

The first line says who did what, with the number
A check rejects a first line that is a stack of labels, a question, or a verdict.

The headline is read cold
Two independent machine readers see only the headline. Each has to say what happened. One of them has to score it at least 7 of 10 for wanting to read on, and neither may score it below 4.

The text is checked, then scored
A pass removes machine phrasing. Two reviewers then score the text. Below the bar it is rewritten or held back.

The legal wording is checked
Words such as fraud or illegal appear only inside quotation marks, as the words of a named court, regulator or outlet. The company's response stays in the story. We never give a verdict in our own voice.

The picture is checked
A free-licence photograph of the subject carries the photographer's credit. Otherwise the picture is an illustration that shows no real person and no logo.
