The news behind the software that runs companies, explained for everyone.

Software business

Half of Slack messages are no longer from people, Salesforce says. It counts a billion messages a day.

Salesforce published the figures on 3 November, six years after it bought the chat app.

It did not say how it decides that a message comes from an app or an agent, or how much of that traffic is automated alerts.

Salesforce says Slack now handles 127 million automated actions a week, in which agents pull data from GitHub, Jira and Salesforce itself. It says that number doubles every quarter, and that 1.9 million users work with outside companies' agents in Slack each week.

At Anthropic, 65% of all code changes ship through Slack, Salesforce says.

The figures leave out which systems those agents can reach, and who approved that access.

For teams that run approvals in Slack, the access review now has to cover the agents posting there as well as the people. Message volume alone says nothing about what an agent is allowed to do.
