Google banned outside AI coding tools. Its engineers may now use Anthropic's Claude.
Business Insider reports that Google now lets engineers across the company use Anthropic's Claude through Antigravity, its internal development platform.
They have access to the Opus 5 model for coding.
Until now, engineers were directed to Gemini. Outside coding tools were off limits except for a small number of groups, including some teams at Google DeepMind and high-priority projects.
Google's own comment, as quoted in the coverage: "Engineers can use some third-party models in Antigravity". It added that "Gemini remains the flagship and foundational model for internal development, and third-party models are provided on a quota basis to support specialized uses."
Access runs on per-user quotas, according to the reporting. Amazon also allows engineers to use Claude and OpenAI's Codex alongside its own Nova models.
Google has committed up to $40 billion to Anthropic, the coverage notes.
