The news behind the software that runs companies, explained for everyone.

Microsoft and Google are not in the school platform six German states agreed to buy. Nextcloud supplies the software.

Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate agreed the framework contract, dpa reported via CIO.de on 3 November.

The deal was announced at the federal government's digital summit in Berlin.

Stuttgart-based Nextcloud supplies the open-source software. IONOS runs the infrastructure.

The purchasing detail matters: the states buy through Govdigital eG, a cooperative of public IT providers. Each can join without running a new tender of its own.

The report gives no contract value, school count or start date, so it is too early to judge the rollout's scale. It includes no response from Microsoft or Google.

For the six states, the cooperative route removes a fresh tender for each of them, a step that often takes the longest when a public body changes its IT supplier.
