AWS announced $1 billion for engineers who build AI inside client firms. Gartner advises clients to plan the exit before they arrive.
Vendors are funding forward-deployed engineers, or FDEs, The Register reported.
They build with the vendor's technology inside a client firm without being tied to a single project.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced its $1 billion FDE unit earlier this month. Anthropic announced $100 million for training them. SAP, Salesforce and Workday, with Accenture, are also investing in the idea, the publication reported.
Levels.fyi puts US median total pay for the role at $216,250 a year.
Gartner warns that, done badly, needing the vendor's engineer for every change creates lock-in. Keeping FDEs because nobody else understands the build is "neither economical nor strategic", it says. Senior director Mukul Saha's advice: "figure out the exit strategy."
Our reading for enterprise architects: your team will maintain what these engineers build. Gartner's conditions belong in the agreement before they arrive: knowledge transfer and shared project ownership.
