Visa says invoice payments will be among AI agents' first real jobs. Controllers approve those payments today.
On its earnings call on 27 October, Visa said business-to-business payments, particularly automatic invoice payments, will be among the first uses of AI agents to take off commercially, The Stack reported.
CEO Ryan McInerney said agent payments today remain "very small in the big scheme of the enormous size of our business."
Visa processed 281 billion transactions in its latest year, up 9%, and did not say how many AI agents started. It expects to double its nearly 50 live AI partners in the coming months.
In July, Mastercard cited research estimating that 0.4% of global e-commerce transactions by volume involve an AI agent. Visa gave no such figure for company invoices.
For controllers, the question sits in accounts payable. Where a person signs off before an invoice is paid, an agent that pays it needs that sign-off written into software as a limit per invoice and a link back to the approval.

For your next steering committee
- 1Ask which AI tools already touch your ERP or finance data, including the ones nobody approved.
- 2Ask what each tool is allowed to change, and who reviews what it changed.
- 3Ask how the result is measured, and who decides to switch a tool off.
