Amazon's CEO said AWS capacity for next year is largely sold. He said Amazon struggles to keep pace.
Andy Jassy, the chief executive of Amazon, spoke on Friday in a video podcast with Ben Horowitz and Erik Torenberg of Andreessen Horowitz, Reuters reported.
"2027 is largely sold out," he said of Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company's cloud business. "A good chunk of 2028 is sold out."
The buyers are AI labs and businesses. AWS holds some capacity back for on-demand customers and for services such as Bedrock and EC2, which rent out AI models and computing power.
Amazon had already planned about $220 billion of capital expenditure for 2026, a year whose capacity is also sold out. In Jassy's view, Amazon could invest a lot more without wasting capital.
A company planning to move its ERP system to AWS in 2027 is buying after the big chunks were sold, by Jassy's account. He did not say how much remains by region or type of machine.
