OpenAI stopped selling its $200 ChatGPT plan. It ran out of computing power.

OpenAI halted new sign-ups and upgrades to its $200 ChatGPT Pro tier on 10 September because demand for its Astra capability was straining system capacity, CIO reported.

The $100 Pro tier and enterprise offerings stayed on sale. Existing subscriptions were not affected.

Thibault Sottiaux, a member of OpenAI's technical staff, said: "Demand for Astra is really unprecedented." He said the company would "pause subscriptions to our $200 Pro plan" because those accounts "put the most strain on our systems and we wanted to take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible". He added that "there is no impact to existing accounts and we are working on adding more capacity as fast as we can".

OpenAI called the pause temporary and gave no date for resuming sign-ups.

Bhupendra Chopra, chief revenue officer at Kanerika, told CIO: "It signals that frontier capacity is still rationed." He added: "Consumer power users are the release valve. Enterprise contracts are what the vendor protects." His advice for buyers was blunt: "A subscription buys you a place in the line. A fixed slice of compute comes only from a contract that says so."
