The news behind the software that runs companies, explained for everyone.

AI at work

Cognizant assigned 25,000-plus staff to roll out OpenAI's AI for clients. It says companies lack builders, not AI models.

Cognizant formed what it calls the OpenAI Frontier Capability Group to roll out Codex and ChatGPT for clients, The Next Web reported on 30 October.

The group starts with software development and moving old mainframe systems to the cloud. It will also deploy AI agents in sales and customer service.

"We are committing more than 25,000 of our people to bring that change inside our clients' businesses," said chief executive Ravi Kumar S. More than 21,000 of its staff have earned OpenAI training badges.

Cognizant is spreading its bets across model makers. Eleven days earlier, it set up a similar group for Gemini, Google's rival AI. OpenAI is also chasing the same work itself: it launched its own deployment arm in May and bought Northslope in July.

Our reading: the 25,000 are existing staff gathered into one group, and the report gives no new-hire number. Group sizes and training badges do not show how many client projects are live.
