Samsung expects $80bn quarterly profit. PCs may cost up to 12% more.

Samsung Electronics said it expects an operating profit of about $80 billion for the third quarter, against about $9 billion a year earlier, The Register reported on 8 October.

It also expects revenue of $145 billion to $146 billion, up from $63 billion.

AI data centres are driving demand for high-bandwidth memory, the chips that sit beside AI processors. Samsung said it expected the memory crunch to deepen in 2027 and potentially last through 2028.

PC buyers are already facing pressure. The Register previously reported that US budget-PC sales fell 18.7% year on year in the first quarter, while average PC prices were forecast to rise by up to 12% by December.

High-bandwidth memory is not laptop memory, so those figures should not be treated as a direct price calculation. For a CFO planning a 2027 laptop refresh, though, Samsung's forecast is a reason to check how long the supplier will hold its quote.
