Microsoft knocked out Remote Desktop with two September security updates.
Microsoft released out-of-band Windows updates after its September 2026 security updates destabilised Remote Desktop Services, BleepingComputer reported.
Users faced RDP connection and sign-in failures. In some cases, servers became unresponsive.
The damage went beyond remote sessions. Microsoft Management Console and the RDS Licensing Diagnoser could stop responding. So could File Explorer and the Windows Update page.
The updates involved include KB5122871 on Windows Server 2025 and KB5122882 on Windows Server 2022. Affected systems span Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2, Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and 26H1. Windows Server 2019, 2022 and 2025 are also affected.
The report lists emergency updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11, along with the three affected Windows Server releases. The same updates address Hyper-V problems with Linux virtual machines and USB audio faults, though some audio issues remain open.
For a terminal server farm, a patch that breaks the login is an outage with a change ticket attached.
