Gartner predicted leading firms will make 80% of new apps disposable by 2030. SAP maintains its core ERP system until 2040.
Gartner expects leading organizations to make 80% of their new applications disposable and easy to replace by 2030.
Analyst Gene Alvarez presented the forecast at Gartner's IT Symposium in Orlando on 20 October, Network World reported.
In Gartner's definition, a disposable app is built to be retired once its business purpose is fulfilled. Alvarez's example, as The National CIO Review reported it, was a merger app that could be retired once the integration is complete.
In 2020 SAP committed to maintain S/4HANA, its current ERP system, until the end of 2040. That is ten years past Gartner's horizon.
Neither report of the forecast names SAP. Our reading for SAP architects: the forecast fits best on the add-on apps they build around the ERP core.
One test is whether each add-on gets a retirement date when it is built. Without one, it risks becoming one more permanent system to maintain. That is what Alvarez's example sets out to avoid.
