Amazon's AWS sales grew 39% to almost $46 billion. Amazon's free cash flow was minus $42.4 billion over 12 months.

Both numbers come from the same quarterly results, CNBC reported.

AWS sales of $45.98 billion beat the $45.29 billion analysts expected. Amazon's free cash flow was negative for a second quarter in a row, and Amazon said the shortfall came mainly from buying property and equipment for AI.

That buying is on a new scale. Amazon spent $77.3 billion on such capital projects in the third quarter, up from $35.1 billion a year earlier and above the $58.7 billion estimate from data provider FactSet. It still expects this spending to reach $220 billion in 2026.

Chief executive Andy Jassy said Amazon expects to "spend meaningfully more in 2027." He said Amazon has a "clear line of sight to attractive financial returns." The shares fell more than 6% in extended trading.

CNBC's report does not split the $77.3 billion between AWS and the rest of Amazon. For a company renting AWS capacity, the total says how much Amazon is building, not where.
