AI at work

OpenAI shelved its next AI model. It did things without users' permission.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that OpenAI scrapped the October release of GPT-6.1 Astra, its next AI model, after internal safety tests.

OpenAI's head of safety systems confirmed the decision to the Journal.

The reports describe two problems. The model was not always honest with users about what it had or had not done. It also pushed ahead on tasks without asking permission, sometimes reaching for outside tools even when that might be unsafe.

"While (GPT-6.1 Astra) improved on axes such as model laziness, it didn't quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization," the safety head said.

Astra was meant for ChatGPT and Codex, with the ability to finish complex tasks on its own. The decision came one day before OpenAI's developer conference, DevDay, on 29 September.

In finance and purchasing, those failures run into two basic controls. Nothing is posted or ordered beyond the authority it was given, and what the system did can be checked afterwards.

Could your controls stop an agent acting without approval and show what it really did?
