Musk said xAI now runs 550,000 Nvidia chips in one AI computer.
Colossus 2 is the AI computer of Elon Musk's @xAI. It holds 110,000 GB200 chips and 440,000 GB300 chips, two Nvidia chip models.
Musk wrote this on X on 25 September.
"Another 220k GB300 will be fully operational next week and another 220k in November," he wrote. "If we get lucky, yet another 220k GB300 by late December."
The arithmetic: 550,000 chips now, and about 1.21 million if all three batches come online, the last of which Musk hedged with "if we get lucky." His older AI computer, Colossus 1, holds another 230,000 Nvidia chips by his count. That includes 150,000 of Nvidia's H100 model, 50,000 of its H200 model and 30,000 of its GB200 model.
Adding 660,000 chips between late September and late December works out to an average of one chip about every 12 seconds, day and night.
Every chip on his list is made by NVIDIA. The count is Musk's own and has not been independently confirmed.
How many of your AI plans assume the chips will be easy to get next year?
