Microsoft 365 families will lose up to 4 TB. Microsoft calls it flexible.
Microsoft is changing OneDrive storage on its Microsoft 365 consumer plans, The Register reported on 9 October.
New subscribers get the change now. Existing customers get it when they renew on or after 2 May 2027.
Family and Premium plans gave 1 TB to each of up to six users, 6 TB in all. They move to 2 TB shared, up to 4 TB less. Pro plans move from 1 TB each to 5 TB shared, up to 1 TB less.
Microsoft says "the goal is to provide a more flexible experience", and that shared storage helps when one person runs out of space while others have room to spare. Its own FAQ puts the question directly: "Is this change a reduction in storage?" Users on Reddit say they plan to cancel rather than renew.
The arithmetic depends on the household. A Family or Premium plan used by one person goes from 1 TB to 2 TB. A household of six that used all 6 TB would hold 4 TB more than the new allowance when the change reaches it at renewal. The report does not say what happens to files over the limit.
Does anyone on your team keep work files on a family plan?
