The news behind the software that runs companies, explained for everyone.

NVIDIA said its software fits up to 40% more chips per megawatt.

"Power is the production constraint," says the narrator of the film NVIDIA posted on 15 September. NVIDIA's answer is DSX, a data centre platform.

Its main piece is DSX MaxLPS. NVIDIA says the software shifts the power budget across GPUs, racks and workloads as demand changes. Data centres are designed for peak demand, so part of their power capacity sits unused much of the time. NVIDIA says MaxLPS puts that "stranded power" to use, so operators can run up to 40% more GPUs, the chips that run AI, within the same megawatt budget.

The film also shows 800-volt direct-current power lines, a closed liquid-cooling loop at 45°C, and DSX Flex, which raises or lowers a site's power draw as conditions on the grid change.

Most of the film is computer animation. The 40% is NVIDIA's own claim, with no independent test cited.

More chips under the same power cap is not the same as using less electricity. The extra chips still draw power and need cooling. A buyer should ask how much more work a site delivers under the same cap.

If a vendor promised you 40% more GPUs on the same power, what proof would you ask for first?

What the captions say

  1. Electricity now limits how big AI data centres grow.
  2. NVIDIA answered with an animated film of its DSX platform.
  3. Its software moves power between chips as demand shifts.
  4. NVIDIA says the same power runs up to 40% more chips.
  5. Liquid cooling at 45°C carries the heat away.
  6. The claim is NVIDIA's own, not tested independently.
