The news behind the software that runs companies, explained for everyone.

AMD was 'on the brink of bankruptcy.' Lisa Su refused phone chips. AMD hit $1 trillion.

A quarter of the staff had already been fired.

When Su became CEO in October 2014, AMD owed $2.2 billion. It had spun off its factories and sold its Austin offices to pay the bills. The stock traded around $3. The engineering magazine IEEE Spectrum later wrote that the company was "on the brink of bankruptcy."

Some board members wanted AMD to make chips for phones. Su told Chief Executive magazine her board asked her "quite clearly": "Look, maybe you should be in the low-power business." She asked for a new chip design from scratch instead and said it would take "probably five years and three generations to become best-in-class." The first chips of that new design, called Zen, went on sale in March 2017.

As of October 2026, AMD is worth about $1.03 trillion, roughly 500 times its value at the end of 2014.

She put a number on how long the fix would take before she started it.

What the captions say

  1. Lisa Su took over chipmaker AMD near $3 a share and refused a phone-chip pivot. By October 2026, it was worth about $1 trillion.
  2. Su, an engineer with three degrees from MIT, became AMD's chief executive in October 2014.
  3. The engineering magazine IEEE Spectrum later wrote that AMD was on the brink of bankruptcy. It owed $2.2 billion.
  4. It had spun off its factories, fired a quarter of its staff, and even sold its Austin offices, then leased them back.
  5. Some of her board members wanted phone chips instead. Su remembers the board's question. "Look, maybe you should be in the low-power business."
  6. Su saw it differently. In her words, AMD had always been trying to be somebody else.
  7. She refused the phone-chip pivot and called for a new design from scratch. Being the best, she said, would take probably five years and three generations.
  8. Her engineers called the design Zen. At one point, AMD's stock fell below $2 a share.
  9. In March 2017, the first chips built on Zen went on sale, under the name Ryzen.
  10. AMD went all in on Zen and small chip pieces called chiplets. In 2022, its value passed rival Intel's for the first time.
  11. As of October 2026, AMD is worth about $1 trillion, about 500 times its value at the end of 2014.
  12. Su once put the bet in one line. "Let me do what I think is the right thing, and let's bet on ourselves."
