Starbucks picked Chennai for its first India office, with 800 jobs planned.
Starbucks signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government on 21 September, ANI reported.
The company will own and staff the centre at Ramanujan IT Park rather than hand it to an outsourcing provider.
Hiring is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027. Starbucks plans more than 250 technology and finance roles in the first year, with the remainder added in phases. The 800 figure is a target rather than a firm commitment.
The centre is separate from Starbucks' Indian retail joint venture with Tata Consumer Products. It joins technology sites in Seattle, Nashville, London and Hong Kong.
Starbucks cited Chennai's technology talent pool and employee retention. The harder test comes later: whether the centre owns decisions and systems, or mainly executes work designed elsewhere.
How much decision-making authority will sit in Chennai?
