SAP offered some AI to on-premise users. Half their maintenance must move to cloud.
SAP is making selected AI features for finance and purchasing available to companies that run its core business software on their own servers ("on-premise") instead of in SAP's cloud, heise online reported on 12 October.
That covers both versions of the software: the old one, called ECC, and the current one, called S/4HANA. Early adopters are testing the link now.
The condition, heise reported: customers must move at least 50 percent of the yearly maintenance fees they pay for their on-premise software into subscriptions for SAP's cloud software.
DSAG, the association of SAP's customers in German-speaking countries, wants companies to get AI without signing a cloud contract, its outgoing chief Jens Hungershausen said. It calls the 50% too strict for mid-sized firms, whose on-premise support runs to 2040. The article carries no response from SAP.
The 50% is money a customer already pays SAP every year for support. The report does not say how long the subscription runs or whether the licences a customer owns keep their value once that money moves.
If half of your SAP maintenance bill moved into cloud subscriptions tomorrow, what would you lose?
