Ikea opened a Washington store last November. It closes on 18 October.

IKEA is closing three of its small plan-and-order stores around Washington, Retail Dive reported on 2 October.

Customers plan rooms there and order the furniture for delivery; there is no warehouse to take goods home from.

The Georgetown store in Washington, D.C., closes on 18 October. It opened on 5 November 2025, replacing a plan-and-order site in Arlington, Virginia. Annapolis, Maryland follows on 30 October and Fairfax, Virginia on 30 November. Staff may move to Ikea stores in Baltimore, College Park and Woodbridge.

In 2023 Ikea announced $2.2 billion over three years for its US fulfilment network and new stores, including nine plan-and-order locations. In February it said it would open 10 more stores this year.

Ikea says it is "continuing to invest in home delivery, pick-up services and its digital channels".

The Georgetown store will close 347 days after it opened. The reports do not give what the three stores cost or how many orders they took, so they do not show whether the format earned a return.

Would a store where you can't take anything home work in your market?
