Home Office AI summarised asylum interviews. 45 of 203 checked summaries failed.
The Home Office uses an AI tool, Asylum Case Summarisation, to summarise interviews with people seeking asylum.
It runs on OpenAI's GPT-4o through Microsoft's Azure. After the April 2026 rollout, 45 of 203 summaries failed initial expert checks, a 22% rate against 9% in the pilot, according to a 20-page Open Rights Group report based on Freedom of Information requests, The Register reported on 13 October.
The group estimates that experts checked about 0.3% of summaries from April to July, against a projected caseload of 17,515 a month. It also says monthly asylum decisions fell about 42% on the year while the time from interview to decision rose 29%. The Register notes those figures do not show that the AI caused the slowdown.
The government says humans remain responsible for asylum decisions. The Home Office did not respond to The Register's questions.
The figures do not show whether the checked summaries were representative of the other 99.7%. According to the group, applicants are not told when AI was used and cannot correct the summary of their own interview.
Who should check an AI summary when the person it describes never gets to read it?

For your next steering committee
- 1Ask which AI tools already touch your ERP or finance data, including the ones nobody approved.
- 2Ask what each tool is allowed to change, and who reviews what it changed.
- 3Ask how the result is measured, and who decides to switch a tool off.
