Broadcom agreed a 10-year VMware deal with NTT DOCOMO. It disclosed no price.
Japanese mobile operator NTT DOCOMO signed a 10-year agreement covering VMware software licences, technical help and maintenance for the private cloud behind its digital services, Broadcom said.
Broadcom called it Broadcom Japan's first 10-year comprehensive agreement of this kind.
VMware is the software many companies use to run their servers as virtual machines. DOCOMO has run its private cloud on VMware since 2019.
Broadcom did not disclose the deal's value, licence volumes or milestones, Converge Digest reported. The site also noted that the announcement does not show DOCOMO moving its whole mobile network onto the software.
On 16 October, CIO.com reported that VMware licence costs have often risen steeply since Broadcom bought the company. In a survey for Rimini Street, 90% of chief information officers (CIOs) at VMware customers said they were weighing alternatives. CIO.com gave no respondent count, and Rimini Street sells third-party support.
One large customer has now committed for a decade. Without the price, the deal says nothing yet about what other VMware customers will pay.

For your next steering committee
- 1Ask when each major software contract renews and what notice period applies.
- 2Ask which price protections are written into the contract and which rest on a sales conversation.
- 3Ask what a price rise on that line would do to the run budget, and who would notice it first.
