British Airways owner IAG chose a fuel-saving AI system for 600 aircraft.
IAG selected OpenAirlines’ SkyBreathe platform for more than 600 aircraft at Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, LEVEL and Vueling, AviTrader reported on 29 September.
Four of the five airlines already use it; British Airways expects to complete its introduction in the coming months.
The software analyses flight plans, weather and aircraft performance data to find fuel savings within existing safety standards. That puts it alongside IAG’s current measures, including improved flight planning, reduced auxiliary-power use and single-engine taxiing where appropriate.
Fuel is one of IAG’s largest costs, according to finance and sustainability chief José Antonio Barrionuevo. IAG has not published a savings target for the rollout.
OpenAirlines says customers using its software saved almost 570 million kilograms of fuel in 2024, worth more than $620 million. That figure covers all of the vendor's customers, not IAG alone.
Which of your biggest cost lines already has software checking the data on every run?
