A drone fire halted a Yandex cloud data centre. Yandex gave no restart date.
Yandex said a fire caused by a drone attack on its data centre in Sasovo, about 300 km southeast of Moscow, "affected part of the Yandex Cloud infrastructure", The Register reported on 9 October.
"Data center operations have been completely halted," Yandex said, and restoring service "will not be possible in the near future". It advised customers to use "alternative service restoration plans", such as rented physical servers. The Register later updated its report: a second Yandex data centre had been struck.
Yandex has not said who launched the drone. Ukrainian press reports cite President Volodymyr Zelensky saying Russia attacked Ukrainian data centres and that his government "always responds in kind".
A cloud zone is built to fail separately from its neighbours, so systems copied across several zones can keep running when one goes. The report gives no count of affected customers. The Register noted that in September Amazon Web Services decided to abandon its Bahrain facility after drone damage.
How many of your systems would survive losing one cloud zone, and when was that last tested?
