A court ordered SAP to restore a refiner's software after 14 months.
The Delhi High Court directed SAP India to restore full and uninterrupted software services to Nayara Energy, the Indian oil refiner in which Rosneft holds 49.13%, Mint and The Economic Times reported.
Justice Vikas Mahajan refused SAP's request to hold the order in abeyance for two weeks.
SAP India suspended the services in July 2025 after the European Union imposed new sanctions targeting Russian interests on 18 July 2025. According to Mint, the suspension covered ECC support, SAP Marketplace access and developer credentials.
Nayara told the court its contract is with SAP India, an Indian entity, governed by Indian law and paid in rupees. It said SAP's services were critical for issuing invoices, and that the disruption affected refinery operations, regulatory compliance and GST 2.0 implementation.
SAP argued that EU sanctions bind it as a German multinational. Its counsel told the court that its officials would end up in a German jail if it restored the services, The Economic Times reported, citing PTI.
Does your ERP contract say what happens when the vendor's parent company falls under a different sanctions regime from yours?

For your next steering committee
- 1Ask which exit clauses your largest software and services contracts carry, and when each can be used.
- 2Ask what leaving would cost, in money and in months.
- 3Ask who reads the contract when a dispute starts, and whether they have read it before.
